Mexican Sociology

Mexican Sociology.

Humor, Reality or Responsability?

We have all heard many jokes about the defects that we have as Mexicans; generalizing all the people in our country in a very wrong way.
Internationally we are known as people who live in extreme poverty, as ignorant, drunk, lazy, thieves, offenders, aggressive, and insensitive, people who live in a very unsafe context, full of corruption, and finally, in a place where the abuse of power is part of our lives.
Physically, it’s well known that we are ugly people.  On the one hand, Mexican men almost always have a moustache, are potbellied, dark-skinned, and with an explosive personality and no respect to women. They don’t like to work but they want to earn a lot of money, and they are always drunk as they go from one party to another.
On the other hand, women are pretty short, dark-skinned too, and with very few aspirations, ignorant and always devoted to the home and family, all which helps us to understand why the male chauvinist is so characteristic.

Most of the time, we find these ideas disguised as jokes that exaggerate those stereotypes, or in movies or television series which show representations of our culture that displays a third world point of view about us. For example, they are always showing us as a people who travel on very average urban transport, surrounded by chickens, through unpaved roads.
We can find this kind of funny, and sometimes we make jokes about ourselves, trying to be cheeky but is that really the image that we want the world to have about us?
I believe that it is our responsibility to make things change and to break all of those stereotypes that countries have about us, and to let them know our positive side, our solidarity and hard-working side, affectionate and brotherly; that side of us unknown to the world that is very important for us.
Also, we should be proud of our people, and of our ingenious ability to solve problems, because there is nothing that can stop us; we are a very practical people, which makes us special and unique.

  1. I think some Mexican people want to be ignorant because they don't really like to be better people, and sometimes because of the money they can't have the education and the possibilities to learn and study in a good school.

Mexican women think if they get married they can have a good life because the man is going to pay everything she wants, she won't need to do anything at home and she can have a nanny for her children. Mexicans can't move on because they don't want to, and some people are lazy and prefer to be at a party rather than be studying at home.

  2. I believe that we as society were just the same that other countries, were just racist and joke about things that are very hurtfull to others, we just enjoy the black humor and stereotypes, cause' seriously, every one laughs when someone makes a joke about NavSon(Navojoa Sonora) jokes, don't we??

We love stereotypes and i don't think that would change in a very long time, it's true that we have a very strong spirit and determination that makes us "special" but we are just to comfortable being the half of the human that we can be.

Just a few people make the change and break the monotony, the people who knew what's going on but, still doesn't care, they i think have more guilt than the people who are just ignorant (for poverty or other things) well that's my feeling.

  3. I think this is a very good topic and I really agree with Tania, because it's sad but true, some people just do nothing to be better people, to improve their living conditions. However, I think everything is possible for everybody, sometimes the way is easier for some than for others, and often, those who find it more difficult prefer to do nothing and keep waiting for everything to fall from the sky

  4. I think the video i just posted, will make us see some points of this post differently.
But there are some things I cant deny, like CORRUPTION and that there are still some men that have NO RESPECT to women, we gotta change that, but I think that for now we are stucked, because alot of mexicans think "THERE'S NOTHING TO DO ABOUT IT", but YES its never too late to make a change.

  5. There is a stereotype for EVERY type of person in the world. For example:
    1) Chinese people: they always appear in cartoons with yellow skin.
    2) African people: we all think that every african is black.
    3) Mexican people: notice that in series or cartoons, we always appear as a maid, or as a worker in fields.
    4) German people: we think that they are as mean as Hitler was.

I have many stereotypes that I can mention too, but we get the point. And unfortunately, we are the ones who create all the existing stereotypes, and we all laugh about it. Its just that we, as mexicans, don't like to be humiliated by the way you mention, but still, we all do it, or we have done it once at least.

    Good topic, by the way.

Can you please add my number to your labels? 10047019. Thanks :)

Like in this map, you can see how the world had a stereotype for every single part.
But always its the mexican in jokes, photos, videos and comments. The typical mexican with the huge mustache, the sombrero and the alcohol. and its not like this.
Its a great Topic Adriana :D

  8. I am not surprised to notice that this post has (so far) attracted more comments and discussion on the blog than any other post. It is a subject that I'm sure was difficult for Adriana to write about. She raised some tough but pertinent points, and I praise her for her courage. I shall not give my opinion on the content of the post though because I don't feel that I am qualified to do so, but let's say that I have made many observations over the years.....:)
