Have anyone of you ever experienced this? I bet that most of you will say yes.
I chose this topic because I've been having some episodes of this disorder and I would like to talk to you about it and share my own experience.
Sleep paralysis, as the name says, it's a state where our body is fully paralyzed in the moment that we are asleep. There are several factors that can take someone to have this disorder. Some scientists have studied this sleep disorder and they say that is more likely that one person experiences this if he/she is sleeping in one specific position: with the back down and the face looking towards the ceiling. Other factors can be stress of any type, the environment surrounding the person or depression.
This disorder can last a few seconds or several minutes (like 2 minutes, more or less), and can be interrupted if anyone else tries to wake the person that is asleep, or he can wake up by himself after a certain period of time.
Sometimes, in this disorder may exist hallucinations or unpleasant dreams, for example, seeing another person in the same room, staring or trying to hurt us.
This problem decreases with the pass of the years, it's more frequent in young people and it can stop at the age of 30, more or less. Although, there are some old people who can present this disorder too.
Now, I want to share my own experience. I've been a little stressed all this week, and on Wednesday I went to sleep at 12 AM and I had an episode of sleep paralysis. When I tried to wake up (obviously I couldn't), I clearly saw my sister waking up, and I thought "great, she's waking up, I'll tell her to wake me up, too", so I 'stretched' my arm to her and I 'touched' her leg. This was weird because I really felt her leg, but I wasn't even moving at all. Obviously, my sister didn't woke me up and I had to do it by myself. When I made it, I opened my eyes and I saw my sister completely asleep, I was so sleepy that I couldn't stay awake any longer and I closed my eyes again and I fell in the same for like 3 times or so. Then I changed my position and it didn't happen again that night. The same thing happened on Thursday night, but this time with no hallucinations.
There is another thing that I want to mention in this post. Maybe, the people that have experienced this, will know this thing: sometimes, when I am in this kind of situation, I try to pray. But I am not able to finish. I don't know why this happens. Actually, I've never been able to finish praying, it is so weird. When I talk about this with other people, they say me they can't finish, either.
I would like you to say something about this topic, share your experience if you've had this disorder. This is a topic that personally, I think is very interesting and I have noticed that a lot of people have passed through this too. Only one person has told me that this was a good experience, for me it wasn't good at all. What do you think?

Hi, my name is Daniela Duran. I found this topic really interesting because this has happened to me twice in the last couple of months and it has been really scaring me. I was sleeping and I felt the need to get up but I couldn't, so I just opened my eyes and tried to move my hand and I felt like I was moving it but I didn't see it moving! This is when I started feeling really scared, so I just closed my eyes back again.
ReplyDeleteAfter this I tried to get up and again felt like I was actually getting up but something pushed me back to bed. The weirdest this about this is that I felt like some sort of energy pushing me down, like if gravity was working with a boost on me.
When I finally could get up it all felt really vague and I couldn't be sure if everything that happened was a dream, cause it felt a little too real for a dream, but it felt a little too blurry for reality.
The day after this I looked up on internet meanings or dream explanations. I read that when you dream that you are paralyzed it normally means stress or feelings oppression.
I also remember trying to pray but couldn't finish, and I agree with you, this didn't feel any good at all. I just hope we don't have to go through any of these again.

Hey, you always tell me that this things happen to you, so everyone, this is true!! I have never feel this kind of things, and I hope never happen to me, is very interesting, and is very important that you tell your experiences, is scary hahahaha :D
ReplyDeleteI think I've been having some episodes of this disorder but it's different, because I was sleeping and I feel like someone was watching me I feel like really scared I pray and this give me peace but inside I was like so scared and I don't feel any good at all I had to spend two hours so I could sleep. I ask some people and they tell me that sometimes they feel the same way but not when they are sleeping, it's an interesting topic because Daniella and me understand what do you feel when this happen to you.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
This post was very interesting to read. I can't say it has happened to me, and it sounds like something that I wouldn't like to happen! What kind of help is available? It must be a very scary feeling to be half awake but unable to move; like being conscious in the dream. I hope that you are able to learn more about the causes and to start to take some action so that it doesn't affect you too much from now on.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful too that through a medium such as this blog that we can learn that we are not alone; that there are others who understand what you are going through. That on its own makes the post completely worthwhile. Thank you all for sharing.
