Ethnic groups.

                        Ethnic groups.

In the state of Sonora we have more than 51,000 people who speak an indigenous language, mostly Maya language. However, there is a representative number of speakers of other indigenous languages as Yaqui, Seri, pima, papago etc.. Their names are known to most current actual ethnic, given by the colonizer.
Sonora has been to over year the scene of cultural developments that have been distinguished by his persistence, his ability to adapt to an environment hostile and demanding.

By his geographic location can be divided into three groups:

People of the sierra

people of the desert

people of the valley

The culture of some of these groups currently is in serious danger of extinction and the most common groups are:

-Mayas: her population is distributed along the mayo river, constituting the largest group, they are keeping alive their language and her festivities are related with religion, and one of its daces is “dance of the deer”.

-Yaquis: is the most representative group of Sonora. They jealously guard their languages , traditions and their attachment to the land.  The Yaqui deer dance is best known within and outside the state, as well as other dance coyotes and the pascolas.

-Seri: their ritual celebrations are focused on their cosmic relationship with the sea and desert, as the feast of the seven blades loggerhead, the new year(late june- early july) and the feast of puberty.

-Papagos: location, caborca, altar, sari, penasco and sonoyta. Its main festival is “the Vi lkita” relates to the rains and the feast of San Francisco and other related catholic rite.
